[From Hannah McCann at the Culture desk] Opening this Wednesday and lasting through the month of July: a consideration of the "Aesthetics of Crossing" at the Van Alen Institute in New York. The exhibition presents nearly tangible projects--two designs for border crossing stations by Smith-Miller + Hawkinson Architects (you may recognize their Massena, N.Y. Land Port of Entry, shown above, which won a GSA on-the-boards award this year)--next to ephemeral constructs that complicate the experience of passing--passports, rules--as re-imagined by artists Kadambari Baxi and Irene Cheng. Together the works invite a consideration of openness and security, transparency and surveillance, and freedom and control.
